Two injured after bus carrying junior hockey team crashes in northern Alberta

Published on

Two injured after a bus carrying a junior hockey team in northern Alberta veered off the road, plunging into a ditch. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of a Friday, saw multiple individuals sustain injuries, with two teenagers requiring hospitalization. The team involved in the accident was not immediately identified by the RCMP. However, a post on social media by the National Junior Hockey League’s Crowsnest Crush indicated that the mishap involved the Athabasca Rivermen.

Details of the Accident

According to the RCMP, the bus was carrying hockey players aged between 15 and 19 when the crash occurred on Highway 2, south of Athabasca. The two teenagers who were significantly injured were taken to a hospital in Edmonton and were reported to be in a non-life-threatening condition. Other passengers reported minor injuries and soreness, receiving treatment at the scene. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. The overall number of passengers on the bus was not initially disclosed by the police.

Impact on Hockey Schedule

The unfortunate incident led to the cancellation of the weekend games between the Crowsnest Crush and the Athabasca Rivermen. The Athabasca team had been en route to the Crowsnest Pass, south of Calgary, for the match when the crash occurred. The team’s charter bus hit some trees, causing the crash.

Expressions of Support

The Crowsnest Crush expressed its deep sympathy for the Rivermen in a social media post, stating, “Our hearts are heavy this morning as we extend all of our prayers, thoughts, and best wishes to the Athabasca Rivermen Junior A Hockey Club and their families.” The situation brought to light the strong sense of community within the National Junior Hockey League, an independent organization not affiliated with Hockey Canada.

Possible Causes of the Accident

While investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, the police hinted that weather conditions might have played a significant role. The road was partially snow-covered and slippery, with the temperature dropping below -30 C. Athabasca, where the accident occurred, is located 140 km north of Edmonton.

Remembering the Humboldt Broncos Tragedy

The accident is a tragic reminder of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team’s fatal crash in 2018. The team was on its way to a game in Saskatchewan when their bus collided with a semi-truck that had crossed a stop sign at a rural intersection. The Humboldt Broncos accident resulted in 16 deaths and 13 injuries, highlighting the potential dangers faced by sports teams traveling in harsh weather conditions.
