Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign veteran QB Bo Levi Mitchell to two-year extension

Published on

Hamilton Tiger-Cats have confirmed that they have signed their veteran quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, to a two-year contract extension. This move ensures that Mitchell, a two-time Grey Cup champion and East Division nominee for Most Outstanding Player in 2025, will continue to showcase his formidable skills in the CFL until at least the end of the 2027 season.

Bo Levi Mitchell: A Key Player for the Tiger-Cats

Mitchell has been a pivotal figure for the Tiger-Cats, starting all 18 games for the team in the past season. His impressive stats speak for themselves: he completed 428 of 626 pass attempts (68 per cent) for 5,296 yards and 36 touchdowns. For the second consecutive year, Mitchell led the CFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns, reinforcing his importance to the Tiger-Cats’ offensive strategy.

“It’s exciting to be back,” Mitchell said in a recent statement. “As soon as the season was over, I just didn’t feel like it was over. I took the pads off, and it didn’t feel like I was taking them off for the last time. So I was very, very excited to make this decision.”

Impact Beyond the Stats

But Mitchell’s contribution to the team extends beyond his impressive on-field performances. Ticats head coach Scott Milanovich praised the quarterback for his influence on the team. “Bo is a proven winner and an elite competitor,” Milanovich said. “His impact on our locker-room and our organization goes well beyond what shows up on the stat sheet. He sets the standard every day with his preparation, leadership and toughness, and he’s exactly the kind of quarterback you want to lead your team.”

With a career that spans 13 seasons in the CFL with both Hamilton and the Calgary Stampeders, Mitchell has amassed a staggering 44,319 yards with 262 touchdowns. His stellar performances earned him the league’s Most Outstanding Player award in both 2016 and 2018.

Stability for the Tiger-Cats

“Bo reflects the qualities we want to continue building this organization around,” said Ticats president of football operations Orlondo Steinauer. “His approach and consistency have added value throughout our building. Bringing Bo back gives us stability at the most important position and lets us continue to move forward with clarity.”

The Tiger-Cats finished first in the East standings this past season but faced a disappointing 19-16 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Final. With Mitchell’s contract extension, the team hopes to build on their successes and improve their performance in the coming seasons.

Other Notable CFL Moves

In other CFL news, Darnell Sankey, the all-star linebacker, has been released by the Montreal Alouettes. Both parties mutually agreed to part ways ahead of the free agency in February. Sankey signed a one-year contract with the Alouettes midway through the 2023 season, aiding the franchise in securing its eighth Grey Cup title. He then signed a two-year extension in Montreal.

Additionally, the Alouettes announced that they’ve signed Canadian linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku to a two-year contract extension through 2027. Cantin-Arku has been a strong performer this season, recording 38 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles, four sacks, one interception, and three forced fumbles.
