World Cup enthusiasts are up in arms over the latest ticket prices, with Football Supporters Europe (FSE), a fan organization, accusing FIFA of a “monumental betrayal”. The discontentment stems from the recent reveal of the ticket prices for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which have been perceived as exorbitant by many fans across the globe.
FIFA’s Allocation and Pricing of Tickets
FIFA, the governing body of world football, typically reserves an eight per cent share of tickets for national associations in games involving their teams. These tickets are then offered to the most dedicated fans. However, the latest price list released by the German soccer federation has sparked controversy, with ticket prices for different group stage matches ranging between US$180 and US$700. The most shocking revelation was the cost of tickets for the final match, with prices oscillating between US$4,185 and US$8,680.
These prices starkly contrast FIFA’s previously announced availability of US$60 tickets. The initial goal of United States soccer officials, when bidding for hosting the tournament seven years ago, was to provide hundreds of thousands of affordable US$21 seats throughout the initial phase of games.
Fan Organizations’ Outcry
The FSE has described the current ticket prices as “extortionate”, stating that it betrays the tradition and spirit of the World Cup. The organization has urged FIFA to halt ticket sales via national associations until a more equitable solution is found, one that respects the cultural significance and universality of the World Cup. The English Football Association, too, has expressed its concern over the pricing, revealing that a fan would have to spend over US$7,000 to attend every game up to the final.
FIFA’s Response
FIFA had announced in September that tickets released via its website would initially range from US$60 for group-stage matches to US$6,730 for the final. However, these prices are subject to change as FIFA has adopted dynamic pricing for the first time at the World Cup. FIFA tickets are classified into four categories, with Category 1 offering the best seats. The Associated Press has approached FIFA for a comment on the matter.
The Latest Phase and Ticket Sales
FIFA launched its third phase of widespread ticket sales recently, allowing fans to apply for specific matches through its “Random Selection Draw”. The schedule for the 2026 tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has been updated, offering fans insight into when and where their favorite teams will play.
Ticket applications can be made at any point during the window, which closes on January 13, 2026. FIFA has clarified that the timing of entry will not affect the chances of success. Fans can apply for a maximum of four tickets per household per match and a maximum of 40 tickets throughout the tournament.
Concerns over Ticket Prices
Comparatively, when the U.S. last hosted the World Cup in 1994, ticket prices ranged from US$25 to US$475. In the Qatar 2022 tournament, prices varied from around US$70 to US$1,600. Currently, tickets for the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19 are already selling for over US$11,000 on secondary resale sites.
FIFA has also launched its own resale platform, charging a 15 per cent fee based on the total resale price. The organization has stated that any remaining tickets closer to the tournament will go on general sale on a first-come, first-served basis, without revealing a specific time frame for the release of these remaining tickets.
