My character, my cancer and how my art reflects my life

Published on

As an author, one’s life events and experiences often seep into the pages of their work. For best-selling author Eva Jurczyk, her latest novel, “6:40 to Montreal”, is a reflection of her own battle with cancer. My character, my cancer and how my art reflects my life is a poignant journey that she shares with her readers, making her narrative both personal and relatable.

The Best-Selling Author’s Personal Journey

Jurczyk’s recent inclusion in the USA Today Best-selling Booklist has not only marked a significant achievement in her career but has also penned the first line of her personal narrative. Her book, “6:40 to Montreal,” has climbed to No. 28 of all books in all formats, an accomplishment that will forever recognize her as a Best Selling Author.

Her book, a thrilling mystery set on a train from Toronto to Montreal, features a best-selling author battling both writer’s block and a terminal cancer diagnosis. Though writing about murder is thrilling, Jurczyk confesses that writing about cancer is terrifying. Reflecting on the societal pressure of being brave in the face of illness, she reveals her personal struggle with sadness, fear, and anger.

A Reflection of Life in Her Art

The plot twist in Jurczyk’s life story began when she was diagnosed with stage IIIC melanoma at the age of 38 in 2022. Despite the terrifying diagnosis, she continued to work and write, keeping her illness private. As she underwent immunotherapy treatments at the Princess Margaret Hospital, she started writing “6:40 to Montreal”.

It was only after her care team declared her free from any disease that she decided to give her book’s character cancer. She repurposed her diary entries that detailed her initial terror into her fiction, creating a raw and realistic depiction of a cancer patient’s journey.

A Personal Journey Shared with the World

Fast forward to 2024, Jurczyk’s health status remained stable with no evidence of disease. However, after a year and a half of being cancer-free, she discovered a lump. Despite the doctors’ efforts, the cancer had spread to her lungs. As her health deteriorated, her book went to print and found its way onto the USA Today Best Seller list.

The success of her book, though a source of pride, also brought a sense of vulnerability as it laid bare her personal journey with cancer. Jurczyk hopes that her honest portrayal of her battle with cancer can offer comfort to others going through a similar experience.

Despite the advancement of her illness, she has chosen to stop hiding her feelings about it. Through her book, she hopes to convey that it’s okay to feel sad, scared, and angry when battling a life-threatening illness.

Eva Jurczyk currently resides in Toronto, continuing her personal battle with cancer, and sharing her journey through her art.
