Mahomes tears ACL in loss to Chargers, Kansas City to miss playoffs

Published on

One of the most significant moments in a recent NFL game was when Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a severe injury, tearing his ACL in a match against the Los Angeles Chargers. This injury, sustained in the last few seconds of the game, marked the end of his season and dashed Kansas City’s hopes of making it to the playoffs. The incident has sent shockwaves through the football community, underlining the high stakes and unpredictable nature of the sport.

Patrick Mahomes Injury: A Major Setback

The ACL tear in Mahomes’ left knee occurred while he was attempting to salvage Kansas City’s postseason hopes during the last moments of a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. This injury is the most significant one in Mahomes’ otherwise brilliant nine-year career. The star quarterback, a two-time MVP, has been instrumental in leading his team to three Super Bowl titles and reaching the AFC championship game in each of his seven previous seasons as Kansas City’s starter. The team announced that Mahomes is considering surgical options to treat the injury.

However, this year, Kansas City will not make the playoffs, and Mahomes is expected to be off the field until sometime in 2026.

The Fateful Play

The injury occurred when Mahomes scrambled toward his team’s sideline and attempted to get rid of the ball. Upon release, he was taken down by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, leading Mahomes to immediately clutch his left knee. Medical staff quickly surrounded him, and he was soon seen limping towards the locker room with a towel draped over his head.

Gardner Minshew, who replaced Mahomes, completed three straight passes to give Kansas City a fighting chance. However, his effort was thwarted when Derwin James intercepted a pass intended for Travis Kelce, effectively ensuring the Chargers’ season sweep of Kansas City.

The Aftermath of the Injury

Following the game, Gardner Minshew expressed his frustration at not being able to secure a win for the team and keep their playoff hopes alive. He also voiced his admiration for Mahomes’ dedication to the sport and expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back from the injury.

The loss, coupled with victories by Jacksonville, Buffalo, and Houston, eliminated the defending AFC champs from playoff contention. This is a significant blow to Kansas City, which has been grappling with injuries among key players, leading to a weakened offense.

Kansas City’s Injury Woes

The injury to Mahomes is the latest in a string of setbacks for Kansas City. The team started the game with left tackle Josh Simmons on injured reserve due to a fractured wrist, and right tackle Trey Smith was inactive because of an ankle injury. Additionally, backup right tackle Jaylon Moore also hurt his knee during the game, leaving the team with limited options to protect their quarterback.

These injuries have not only affected the team’s offensive capabilities but also their defense. Key defensive players, including Trent McDuffie, Nick Bolton, Chris Jones, and Jaylen Watson, all suffered injuries during the game, further compounding the team’s woes.

Despite these setbacks, the team remains resilient and committed to improving their performance in the upcoming season.
