After years of minimalism, fashion is turning to its wilder side. The once-muted tones and patterns are making way for a more vibrant and expressive trend – animal prints. From leopard spots to zebra stripes and snakeskin, these bold prints have found their way into the latest collections of many designers, including Canadian designer Hilary MacMillan, who incorporates these prints with a unique twist.
The Rise of Animal Prints
Known for her bold prints and inclusive sizing, Hilary MacMillan has noticed an increase in the demand for animal prints over the past few seasons. Initially, these prints were considered a daring choice, but today, they have evolved to be a staple in many wardrobes. MacMillan explains, “When we first started using it, the customer was definitely more fun and wanted to stand out from the crowd. But we’re finding now it’s spanning across all generations and all dressing styles. It has become more of a neutral and a basic in people’s wardrobes.”
Expression Through Fashion
Carolyn Wright, senior vice president of product at Holt Renfrew, believes the appeal for such bold prints stems from a desire for self-expression. After years of minimalism, customers are seeking ways to showcase their personality through their attire. Dr. Carolyn Mair, a fashion psychologist and author, agrees with this sentiment, stating, “Following years characterized by minimalism, often associated with control, stability and subtlety, people may now be seeking forms of self-expression that feel more expansive and emotionally charged.”
Animal Prints in Designer Collections
These prints are being incorporated into various kinds of apparel. For instance, New York designer Gabriela Hearst has used ethically sourced python leather from invasive species in Florida in her designs, while Montreal outerwear brand Mackage has featured textured leopard print in its Fall/Winter 2025 lineup. MacMillan, on the other hand, has utilized a more playful approach by using a pattern composed of entire animals rather than their stripes or spots.
The Impact of Wearing Animal Prints
According to Dr. Carolyn Mair, wearing animal prints can influence how one feels. “Because these patterns are visually assertive, choosing to wear them may help people embody the qualities they associate with the animal represented in the print – strength, charisma or daringness,” she says.
Tips for Incorporating Animal Prints
For those who find animal prints too bold, MacMillan suggests sticking to neutral tones. She also recommends pairing animal prints with jewel tones for the holiday season. “The holidays are a time to go a bit wild,” she says. “Pair the animal print with the sequins and have a little bit of fun with it. It’s a joyous time. You might as well also joyously dress.”
