Niagara Falls could get massive new observation wheel and theme park

Published on

Exciting news for both locals and tourists alike, as Niagara Falls could soon be home to a massive new observation wheel and theme park. The Ontario government has recently launched its multibillion-dollar Destination Niagara Strategy, aiming to transform the region into a world-renowned tourism hotspot. The plan includes a host of improvements and additions to the area, including a world-class observation wheel, similar to the famous Las Vegas High Roller and London Eye.

Ambitious Plans for Niagara Falls

The provincial government’s ambitious strategy was unveiled on Monday, intending to attract 25 million annual visitors and double the region’s tourism impact. The plan targets improvements and new developments across five categories: tourism attractions, gaming, wine and culinary tourism, arts and culture, and transportation development.

Several potential projects have been identified under this strategy. The Toronto Power Generating Station, located along the Niagara River, is already in the process of being transformed into a boutique hotel. Other potential projects include a new theme park, restoration of the Niagara Parks marina, and most notably, a new observation wheel.

Welcoming the World to Niagara

Jim Diodati, Mayor of Niagara Falls, warmly welcomed the Ontario Government’s proactive approach. He expressed his gratitude towards Premier Ford, Minister Cho and the Government of Ontario for their strong support and belief in Niagara’s potential.

He emphasized that this announcement will significantly boost their tourism economy, attracting major new private sector investment, creating job opportunities for residents, and ensuring Niagara remains a must-visit destination for global tourists.

Transportation and Infrastructure Improvements

As part of the plan, the provincial government aims to improve the region’s transportation network. This includes expanding the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Niagara, twinning the Garden City Skyway, and increasing GO service to the region. These improvements will facilitate easier access for tourists and locals alike, bolstering the region’s overall attractiveness.

World-class Observation Wheel

The provincial government is set to launch a series of procurements to develop a “world-class observation wheel” in Niagara Falls. This initiative comes on the heels of the success of Niagara Takes Flight, a new immersive flying theatre attraction that has already welcomed more than 120,000 visitors and generated nearly $3.5 million in gross revenue since its opening in August.

Ford’s Grand Vision for Niagara

This is not the first time a member of the Ford political dynasty has proposed an enormous Ferris wheel in Ontario. Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford famously proposed one during his tenure as part of a redevelopment plan for the Port Lands, although the idea was widely criticized.

Alongside the observation wheel, the provincial government is also exploring the potential of a signature theme park attraction and a possible Niagara River attraction. This could include an all-season automated electric tram running through Queen Victoria Park.

Investments in Arts and Culture

Beyond new attractions and transportation improvements, there have also been significant investments in the region’s arts and culture sector. The province has invested $35 million in the Shaw Festival’s rebuild of the Royal George Theatre and more than $1 million in funding for various festivals and events in the region. This solidifies Niagara’s commitment to offering a rich, diverse cultural experience for visitors of all interests.
