Court rules PSG must pay more than $70M to Mbappé in dispute over unpaid wages

Published on

In a significant ruling that has captured the attention of the football world, a Paris labor court has decreed that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) must pay over €60 million ($70M) to their former star player, Kylian Mbappé. This decision comes after a heated dispute involving unpaid wages and bonuses from the end of Mbappé’s contract in 2024.

A High-Stakes Judicial Battle

The Conseil de prud’hommes de Paris, a labor court, became the battleground for this dispute last month. Lawyers from both sides presented their cases, involving staggering sums of money. The court, on Tuesday, ruled in favor of Mbappé, who had accused the club of betrayal and moral harassment leading to the deterioration of his relationship with PSG. The awarded sum approximately matches Mbappé’s initial claim of €55 million.

Contract Controversy and Legal Standoff

In November, the lawyers representing Mbappé argued that PSG owed him more than €260 million. They maintained that his fixed-term contract should be reclassified as a permanent one, a notion that the judges dismissed. Such reclassification would have instigated compensation for unfair dismissal, unpaid wages, bonuses, and severance. PSG, on the other hand, demanded €440 million from Mbappé, citing damages and a “loss of opportunity” due to his departure on a free transfer.

PSG’s Response to the Ruling

Despite the unfavorable outcome, PSG has stated that they respect the ruling and will comply with it, although they reserve the rights to appeal. They asserted their commitment to good faith and honesty throughout the ordeal and extended their best wishes to Mbappé for his future endeavors.

Mbappé’s Perspective on the Verdict

Representatives for Mbappé have expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. They emphasized that the ruling affirms that all commitments must be honored, even in the professional football industry. They reiterated the point that labor law applies to everyone, restoring a simple but powerful truth.

The Breakdown of the Relationship

The relationship between Mbappé, a 2018 World Cup winner, and PSG, the reigning European champions, turned sour when he decided not to extend his contract in 2023, which was due to expire in the summer of 2024. This decision deprived the club of a significant transfer fee, despite offering him the most lucrative contract in the club’s history when he signed a new deal in 2022.

A Lingering Feud

The feud between the player and the club has its roots in a disagreement in August 2023. It revolved around an alleged agreement that included a pay reduction for Mbappé if he left on a free transfer, an arrangement that PSG claimed was meant to protect its financial stability. The club accused Mbappé of violating contractual obligations and the principles of good faith and loyalty by hiding his decision not to extend his contract for nearly 11 months.

What’s Next for Mbappé?

Mbappé, after seven years at PSG and scoring a club-record 256 goals, transferred to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer. Despite his departure, PSG managed to win the Champions League this year. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this court ruling impacts Mbappé’s career and future relationships with clubs.
