Chani Nicholas on why astrology is having a moment

Published on

As the founder of the CHANI astrology app, Chani Nicholas is no stranger to navigating the stars and analyzing the patterns of the cosmos. Recently, she shared her thoughts on why astrology is having a moment, particularly among millennials and Gen Z. This Canadian-born astrologer, now based in New York, intertwines the personal with the political, offering astrology readings through a uniquely queer, feminist, and politically progressive lens.

A Day of Misadventures

During an interview with Globe and Mail reporter Ann Hui, things didn’t exactly go as planned. The meeting almost didn’t happen due to a calendar mix-up, and a visit to a local stationery shop turned into a comedy of errors, with the shop being closed when they finally found it. Nicholas took it all in stride, attributing the mishaps to Mercury being in retrograde, a phenomenon known for causing mix-ups and miscommunications.

Astrology Resurgence Among Younger Generations

Despite the day’s mishaps, Nicholas remains one of the world’s most well-known astrology experts, amassing about 3 million followers across her CHANI app and podcast. Her book was an instant New York Times No. 1 best-seller. Astrology has seen a resurgence in interest, particularly among millennials and Gen Z. A 2024 survey found that approximately 63% of these demographic groups rely on astrology for career guidance, contributing to the multi-billion-dollar business that astrology has become globally.

Combining Personal with Political

Nicholas’ approach to astrology is unique in that she combines personal readings with political commentary. For her, astrological events can explain not just individual experiences, but also global and political happenings. This perspective has helped her gain popularity, particularly amid the current global state of uncertainty and chaos.

Nicholas’ Journey Into Astrology

Chaos was also the catalyst for Nicholas’ own journey into astrology. Growing up amidst addiction and instability, she felt seen for the first time when her father took her to an astrologer at age 12. Later, feeling unfulfilled teaching yoga to privileged individuals, she began writing essays combining horoscopes with political activism. These writings resonated with the queer community, and her following grew.

Success and Social Responsibility

Today, Nicholas and her wife Sonya Passi, the CEO of CHANI, manage a staff of 44 employees, all earning a living wage of $80,000 for a four-day work week. The company donates 5% of its revenue to a non-profit supporting survivors of sexual violence. For Nicholas, astrology is not about belief but connection to something larger. Her aim is for everyone to find their purpose and be of service in the world.

Astrology: A Tool for Understanding

While some may see astrology as a means to absolve themselves of responsibility or to explain away mistakes, Nicholas argues that it is a tool for understanding. It provides a chronological context, helping people make sense of the world around them. The current popularity of astrology, she suggests, is a testament to its ability to provide solace and answers during chaotic times.
