The most useless gift one year was also the most amusing

The most useless gift one year was also the most amusing. It was a singing bird clock, a product that was popular for a fleeting moment in the late 1990s. This simple device, intended to bring an element of nature’s serenity into the home, instead became a source of laughter and amusement for my family for many festive seasons.

The Singing Bird Clock

My mother discovered the singing bird clock in a magazine ad. It was designed to chime a different bird song every hour, a concept she thought my father, who had recently moved into a care home, would appreciate. The reality, however, was far from the tranquil summer garden in the Canadian Prairies we all imagined.

Upon its arrival, we eagerly opened the package and inserted the batteries. But instead of the melodious bird songs we anticipated, the clock emitted sounds more reminiscent of a pinball machine. The cacophony was far from the soothing tweets of real birds, and one bird call even sounded like a machine gun’s rapid fire.

The Unexpected Comedy

Despite the disappointment, the situation soon turned into a comic relief. The absurdity of the situation led to fits of laughter, transforming what should have been a disappointing moment into an amusing memory. The clock, instead of being a serene reminder of nature, became a source of entertainment at family gatherings.

There was another peculiar detail about the clock: the face displayed drawings of birds with their names printed in Latin. While my father did appreciate birds, he was not likely to recognize their scientific names. Despite a thorough search of the packaging, no English translations could be found. The instructions, riddled with misspellings and printed in upper case, only added to the comedy of the situation.

The Best Worst Gift

Ultimately, the singing bird clock never made it to my father’s care home. Instead, it found a permanent home in my mother’s closet, only to be brought out for demonstration whenever friends and relatives visited. The laughter it induced was worth every penny of the $29.95 (plus shipping) that was spent on it.

For many festive seasons, the clock was brought out for a noisy spin around the hours, until it finally ceased its “striking chaos”. This unintentionally hilarious gift ended up being the highlight of our holiday seasons, much more entertaining than the usual fruitcake.
