Toronto is hosting one of the most in-demand matches of FIFA World Cup

Published on

Toronto is set to be a key destination for soccer fans worldwide as it gears up to host one of the most in-demand matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The city will see an influx of passionate supporters, eager to witness a titanic clash between some of the world’s top soccer teams at the newly expanded BMO Field. With 104 matches scheduled for the tournament, one of the most sought-after is the July 2nd Round of 32 match in Toronto.

High Ticket Demand for Toronto Match

FIFA reported an overwhelming 500 million ticket applications between December 11 and January 13. The organization has since disclosed the five most in-demand matches based on ticket requests. Interestingly, apart from the World Cup Final, the most coveted ticket for a knockout-stage match is in Toronto, set to take place on July 2.

The question arises, why is this particular match garnering such high demand among the 30 knockout-stage games preceding the World Cup finale? The answer lies in the teams likely to face off in this exciting encounter.

Potential Powerhouse Showdown

Group K comprises two major soccer powerhouses: Portugal, ranked sixth in the FIFA World Rankings, and Colombia, ranked 13th. One of these two teams is expected to compete in the July 2 match, unless Uzbekistan, ranked 50th, or the winner of the IC Path 1 pulls off an upset.

Group L, on the other hand, will see a fierce competition between two of the world’s top-10 soccer nations. England, ranked fourth, and Croatia, ranked 10th, are the clear favorites over Panama, ranked 30th, and Ghana, ranked 72nd. Therefore, the anticipated match-up for the Toronto match is likely to be Portugal/Colombia vs. England/Croatia, ensuring an exciting encounter for the audience.

Heavy Demand from Soccer-loving Nations

Not only are these teams known for their soccer prowess, but fans residing in these countries have also shown immense interest in the match. Apart from the three host nations of the FIFA World Cup 2026 — Canada, Mexico, and the United States — the top countries in terms of ticket demand include Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Colombia.

Toronto’s hosting of such a high-stakes match serves as a potential redemption for missing out on games featuring England, France, or Norway, and its star player Erling Haaland.

Other Coveted Matches of FIFA World Cup 2026

Alongside the Round of 32 showdown in Toronto, other highly coveted matches based on ticket requests include Colombia vs Portugal in Miami on June 27, Mexico vs Korea Republic in Guadalajara on June 18, Mexico vs South Africa in Mexico City on June 11, and of course, the FIFA World Cup Final in New Jersey on July 19.

Toronto’s Role in the Tournament

In total, Toronto will host seven matches throughout the FIFA World Cup. The city will kick-off with a match between Canada and one of the teams from Italy, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 13. The final match in Toronto will be the anticipated knockout game on July 2, promising a thrilling spectacle for soccer enthusiasts around the globe.
