Bills stay focused on themselves, not defending their AFC East title

Published on

In an upcoming game that could potentially decide the fate of the AFC East title, the Buffalo Bills stay focused on their own performance rather than worrying about defending their title. Left tackle, Dion Dawkins, emphasizes the team’s focus on winning every week, rather than obsessing over the title defense. The Buffalo Bills, led by quarterback Josh Allen, are set to face the New England Patriots this Sunday in a game that could potentially relegate the Bills to chasing a wild-card playoff berth.

Focus on Winning, Not Defending

According to Bills’ left tackle Dion Dawkins, the team’s primary expectation is to secure a win against the Patriots this Sunday. Dawkins stressed the importance of stopping the Patriots’ Drake Maye and preventing the team from ending Buffalo’s divisional run of dominance. However, the primary focus remains on the team’s consistent objective to win every week. Dawkins further elaborated, “We play the game to win. So our goal is to win everything. But it ain’t about defending the title, we just got to be the best version of ourselves.”

Team’s Spirit Echoed by Coach Sean McDermott

The sentiments of Dawkins were shared by numerous teammates and coach Sean McDermott. If the Patriots manage to win the upcoming game, they would clinch their first AFC East title since 2019, pushing the Bills into a challenging wild-card playoff pursuit. Despite the high stakes, Josh Allen, the reigning MVP, states that the team’s main goal remains making the playoffs, irrespective of the AFC East title.

A Journey Through the Past

The Buffalo Bills, despite having won five straight divisional titles, have not been able to secure a Super Bowl berth. Their closest attempts were a pair of losses to Kansas City in the AFC championship games in 2020 and the previous season. However, the recent victories over Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have shown the team’s improving performance and resilience.

Road to the Playoffs

If the Buffalo Bills make the playoffs as a wild-card, they would have to start on the road, where they have lost six straight postseason games. Despite the challenges, receiver Gabe Davis expresses confidence in the team, stating, “Can we still go to the playoffs if we’re not the AFC East champs? Now do I believe that we are going to be AFC East champs? Yeah. I believe that. And I believe everyone here still has the goal to be an AFC East champ.”

Injury Report

On the injury front, RT Spencer Brown has announced that he’s ready to return after missing two games due to a right shoulder injury. Top pass rusher Joey Bosa has resumed practice in a limited capacity. TE Dawson Knox, however, missed practice due to personal reasons.
