In a tragic incident, search teams discovered a second body on Friday following a massive rockfall off a hiking trail in the picturesque Banff National Park in Canada.
Retired Educator Identified as One of the Victims
The University of Alberta confirmed that the fatalities included one of their retired educators, Jutta Hinrichs, a former leader in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Parks Canada officials have revealed that she was 70 years old and resided in Calgary.
Details of the Rockfall Incident
The rockfall incident occurred on Thursday afternoon north of Lake Louise on the Icefields Parkway, a location approximately 124 miles northwest of Calgary and about 85 miles from the Group of Seven summit site in Kananaskis, Alberta. Three other individuals were also injured in the incident, who were later transported to the hospital and are currently reported to be in stable condition.
According to the officials, no other individuals have been reported missing and there are no unidentified vehicles at the trailhead.
About the Hiking Trail
The trail, which runs along the edges of Bow Lake, is a popular spot for tourists, day-trippers, and families. Though considered a moderate challenge for hikers, it is a region with limited cellular service, adding to the challenges faced during emergencies.
Witness Accounts of the Incident
Niclas Brundell, a trail guide residing in nearby Canmore, recounted his horrifying experience of the rockfall. Brundell and his wife were hiking in the area when they noticed rocks and boulders, some as large as tires, starting to tumble. He described the sight of the entire mountainside coming off as unimaginable.
Brundell likened the incident to scenes from 9-11, with the dust cloud caused by the dislodged rocks covering everything in sight. After reaching a safe distance, Brundell sent a satellite message to Parks Canada, while his wife rushed to a nearby lodge to raise an alarm. He stressed that the trail, due to its relative ease, is a popular spot and usually has at least 15 people hiking on any given summer day.
