Love in the time of sauna: How sweat sessions became the hottest place for Canadian singles

Love in the time of sauna: How sweat sessions became the hottest place for Canadian singles. For many, this might seem an unlikely setting for romance. However, as the modern dating landscape evolves, people are increasingly seeking out unique and authentic ways to connect with potential partners. Among these new approaches, sauna dating has emerged as a popular trend, particularly among Canadians. As they step away from the digital realm of dating apps, these individuals are finding that the sauna’s warm, distraction-free environment not only offers a refreshing change but also fosters genuine human connection.

Singles Night at Kolm Sauna

Rosa Borkowicz, like many others, grew tired of the superficiality and inefficiency of dating apps. The endless swiping and ghosting, coupled with lackluster conversations, prompted her to seek real-life interactions. Rosa’s pursuit of in-person connection led her to a singles night at Kolm, a popular sauna and cold plunge studio in Vancouver’s Cambie Village. She found the environment conducive to starting conversations and making connections. Even though she didn’t find love on her first visit, Rosa plans to return, highlighting the appeal of this unconventional approach to dating.

The Rise of Sauna Dating

While saunas have traditionally been viewed as places for solitude and relaxation, their potential as social spaces is increasingly being recognized. The global sauna market, projected to reach US$1.27 billion by 2030, is a testament to their growing popularity. In Canada, the number of sauna businesses is on the rise, with market growth expected to be around 6% per year over the next five years. As the sauna industry flourishes, businesses are beginning to cater to singles by hosting special events, turning these hot spots into the latest venues for sober socializing and potential romance.

The Appeal of Sauna Dating

Ian MacKay, a sauna regular based in Squamish, British Columbia, believes that saunas create a space for vulnerability, fostering honest connections. Without the trappings of conventional dating settings, such as designer clothes or flashy cars, individuals can focus on authentic interaction. Clinical psychologist Dr. Tracy Dalgleish supports this view, pointing out that the distraction-free environment of a sauna encourages introspection and authenticity. She suggests that the absence of smartphones and the focus on the present moment allow people to be more open and vulnerable, crucial elements in forming lasting relationships.

Boosting Connections with Cold Plunges

Beyond the heat of the sauna, cold plunges are another feature of these events that can enhance mood and reduce stress. Many sauna dating events, like those at East Vancouver’s the Good Sauna, kick off with an ice breaker in the cold-plunge tubs. This shared experience not only encourages camaraderie among participants but also triggers the release of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that can increase alertness and sexual arousal. Emily Bent, co-founder of Othership, a sauna and ice bath studio, likens the effect to having a couple of drinks, noting that it makes people feel happier, more open, and more confident.

Expanding Opportunities for Connection

While most sauna singles events currently cater to heterosexuals, there is a growing interest in expanding these opportunities to the LGBTQ community. Businesses like the Good Sauna hope to start hosting queer singles events in partnership with local LGBTQ community members. In Vancouver’s West End, a new Eastern European-inspired sauna called AetherHaus recently hosted a queer session, indicating an increased inclusivity in the sauna dating trend.

Not Just for Singles

Saunas aren’t just a hotspot for singles. Couples too are finding these spaces conducive to nurturing their relationships. For instance, Michael Moses proposed to his girlfriend, Erika Saari, in a sauna, recognizing it as a meaningful place for them. He now frequently recommends the sauna to his single friends as a place to foster a connection.

In the era of digital dating, the rise of sauna dating signals a shift towards more authentic and meaningful connections. As people seek out these hot, steamy spaces, they find more than just relaxation. They find an opportunity for genuine interaction, vulnerability, and perhaps even love.
