Home of the Week: Five-minute tour in the dark sells couple on downtown Toronto condo

Published on

A downtown Toronto condo located at 130 Rusholme Rd., Unit 601, was love at first sight for Guybrush Taylor and Laura Kim. Despite visiting this stunning unit in the dark, the couple was instantly sold on the idea of calling this place home. It was a brief, five-minute tour that left an unforgettable impression, and led them to discover their dream home in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

The Property Details

The condo, currently listed at an asking price of $1,349,000, is a real estate gem in the heart of Toronto. It comes with an annual tax of $6,145.81 (as of 2025) and a monthly maintenance fee of $1,306.03. The property is represented by real estate agent David Nichols from Sutton Group Old Mill Realty.

The Backstory

The couple first visited the IT Lofts in Toronto’s Dufferin Grove neighbourhood during the final stages of its construction. It was a chilly winter night, and the electricity had not been set up yet. However, the moonlit snow offered enough light to reveal the stunning beauty of Unit 601, making an impression that was hard to forget.

Having recently moved from Chicago, where they worked in marketing and data science, the couple was on the lookout for a place that offered both a view and privacy. The vast terrace of the unit, overlooking a neighbourhood of Victorian-era houses, with a clear view of the CN Tower and the city skyline, was precisely what they desired.

Living and Working in Unit 601

The open concept living area of the unit, complete with kitchen, dining, and lounging spaces, faces floor-to-ceiling windows. The unit spans 1,262 square feet and features two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, positioned on opposite sides for added privacy. The primary bedroom even features additional closet space and a walkout to the terrace.

One bedroom currently serves as a shared office for the couple, proving to be a perfect workspace during the pandemic. They often take coffee breaks on the terrace, enjoying the scenic views and refreshing their minds.

Minimalist Interior Design

The couple, especially Mr. Taylor, being a former art director, have followed the principles of traditional minimalism in their interior design. The white walls, concrete ceiling, and brushed oak floors provide a neutral backdrop. The furniture and decor have been carefully chosen not to distract from the breathtaking view.

Neighbourhood Highlights

Stepping outside the building, the couple enjoys the various amenities the neighbourhood offers, like the West End YMCA, premium sushi restaurants, wood-fired pizza joints, and Vietnamese coffee shops. The close-knit community reminds them of a small town, where everyone is familiar with each other.

The Best Feature

Perhaps the most striking feature of the property is the terrace, which the couple has transformed into a beautiful garden. They have planted a variety of flowers, including lush lilacs, roses, and hydrangeas, which bloom from spring through fall. The terrace has been divided into sections for lounging, socializing, and dining al fresco, offering a unique urban gardening experience in the heart of the city.
