Toronto snowstorm: Snowfall breaks local record as OPP report 400 collisions, service calls

Published on

Toronto has been hit by a record-breaking snowfall, causing widespread disruption to daily life. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported over 400 collisions and service calls as a result. The extreme weather has severely impacted both Pearson and Billy Bishop airports, with multiple flights being cancelled or delayed. Additionally, several schools across the city have been forced to close, while commuters on the TTC and GO Transit have experienced significant delays.

Record-Breaking Snowfall in Toronto

The snowstorm, which many are calling a ‘snowpocalypse’, has broken local records with its intense snowfall. According to Environment Canada, Toronto received over 20 cm of snow, surpassing the previous record set in 1959. This has contributed to treacherous driving conditions, with the OPP responding to hundreds of service calls and collisions across the province. (source)

Impact on Air Travel

The winter weather has had a significant impact on air travel in the city. Pearson and Billy Bishop airports, two of the busiest in the country, have seen numerous flights cancelled or delayed due to the adverse conditions. Both airports have been working tirelessly to manage the situation, with crews busy clearing runways and de-icing planes. (source)

School Closures and Transit Delays

The snowfall led to the closure of many schools across Toronto, as officials deemed conditions unsafe for travel. Parents were notified early in the morning about the closures, leaving many scrambling to arrange childcare. In addition, public transit users faced significant delays. Both the TTC and GO Transit experienced disruptions to their service, with some routes being temporarily suspended due to snow accumulation. (source)

Looking Ahead

As Toronto residents continue to navigate the after-effects of the snowstorm, officials are encouraging everyone to stay safe. The city’s snow-clearing teams are out in full force, working to clear roads and sidewalks. Despite the disruptions, many are embracing the winter weather, with people sharing images of snow-covered Toronto on social media. As always, residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and travel advisories. (source)
