The Ontario Highway 407 ETR is making significant strides in supporting low-income drivers in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In a landmark move for 2026, the Route Relief Program will be expanded to offer an additional 24 free rides per year, a substantial increase from the current program. This news comes as a welcome relief for eligible drivers who rely on this vital highway for their daily commute.
Expanding the Route Relief Program
Starting from January 1, 2026, the Route Relief Program will offer eligible drivers up to eight free trips per month, a rise from the previous six. This initiative is part of the company’s long-term goal to make transportation across the GTA more accessible and affordable for those in financial need. In 2026, low-income drivers will be able to benefit from up to 96 free rides, a significant increase from the 72 free rides offered in the current year.
The Success of the Route Relief Program
The Route Relief Program was first initiated in November 2024 and is the first financial assistance program by 407 ETR that offers monthly trips over a 12-month period. According to the company, the program has assisted more than 2,800 drivers so far and has provided over $1 million in free travel. John Galibert, Vice President of Customer Operations, shared positive feedback from seniors, single mothers, and students, affirming the significant positive impact of the Route Relief Program in their lives. The program expansion aims to amplify this impact by offering an additional 24 free trips each year.

Eligibility for the Program
The Route Relief Program is open to Ontario residents who fulfill the eligibility criteria. Applicants must submit documents including proof of residency, proof of plate ownership, proof of income, and a completed 407 ETR Privacy Consent Form. Additionally, they must comply with several conditions such as having a personal licence plate registered in their name, having no outstanding balance with 407 ETR, and not being enrolled in another 407 ETR promotion. Household size and income will also be factored into the eligibility assessment.
Enrollment and Benefits
Once enrolled, drivers will automatically receive credits for up to eight trips per month on the highway starting from January 1, 2026. Enrollment is valid for one year, with the option to renew annually. Alongside the Route Relief Program, Ontario Highway 407 ETR offers other support programs for those facing financial hardship, such as the Repayment Assistance Program, Exceptional Hardship Program, and the Financial Hardship Program.
