An era is coming to an end in Toronto’s culinary scene, as one of the city’s most iconic sandwich shops is set to close its doors after over 70 years of service. San Francesco Foods, a staple in Little Italy, has been a beloved family-owned eatery since it first opened in 1954.
San Francesco Foods: A Toronto Staple Since 1954
With a staggering number of sandwich shops across Toronto, only few have stood the test of time like San Francesco Foods. Nestled in the vibrant neighbourhood of Little Italy, this family-owned establishment has been serving Toronto residents with mouthwatering sandwiches and other Italian classics for an impressive 71 years. Its original location on Clinton Street has been the go-to spot for the legendary veal sandwiches that the city has come to adore.
While other branches in North and East York have opened and closed throughout the years, the Clinton Street flagship has remained a consistent presence. Its longevity has made it one of the last remaining original Italian-owned businesses in the neighbourhood, a testament to its culinary prowess and community love.
A Heartfelt Farewell on Social Media
On December 18, the cherished sandwich shop made a heartfelt announcement on its social media accounts. The team shared the somber news that the Clinton Street location would be closing permanently on December 22. The news marked the end of an era for Toronto’s food scene, as the legacy of San Francesco Foods is one that is scarcely paralleled within the city.
“We appreciate all the support and love from the community for the last 71 years. We will still be serving until Sunday December 21 2025,” the post read. This announcement was met with bittersweet reactions from the community, reflecting the cherished place San Francesco Foods holds in the hearts of Toronto residents.
The Legacy Continues
Despite the upcoming closure, this won’t be the last you’ll see of San Francesco in Toronto. The sandwich shop teased a residency at the 2026 CNE Food Building, giving loyal customers something to look forward to. Until then, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the shop for one final sandwich and to bid farewell to the team.
San Francesco Foods will continue to serve its iconic sandwiches at its remaining location in Mississauga at 3045 Clayhill Rd, keeping the legacy alive.
