Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews just surprised locals at Toronto outdoor rink

Published on

In a delightful surprise for fans, Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews was recently spotted at a local outdoor rink in Toronto. This unexpected encounter has sparked joy amongst the community, showcasing that even NHL superstars enjoy a casual skate in their hometown. With over 50 outdoor rinks scattered across Toronto, the chance of running into a Maple Leafs player now seems like a possibility rather than a far-fetched dream.

Maple Leaf’s Star Auston Matthews Spotted at Greenwood Rink

After a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Philadelphia, Auston Matthews returned to Toronto. The following day, he was seen enjoying a skate at Greenwood Rink, one of Toronto’s popular outdoor ice rinks. Elaine C Gauthier, a local Facebook user, shared a picture of her son posing next to Matthews at the rink, much to the delight of fellow Torontonians.

Matthews’ Casual Visit to the Rink Sparks Excitement

The photograph of Matthews at Greenwood Rink sparked curiosity among Facebook commenters, with many questioning the reason behind his visit. However, Gauthier clarified that the 28-year-old star was simply enjoying a casual skate. Her son, who got the chance to meet the Leafs’ captain, described Matthews as “really nice”.

Greenwood Rink: A Popular Skating Spot in Toronto

Greenwood Rink, where the chance encounter took place, opened its doors in 2013 and became the city’s first covered outdoor rink. The adjacent Greenwood Park also boasts a 215-metre-long outdoor skating path, making it a popular spot among locals. However, spotting an NHL superstar like Matthews is certainly not an everyday sight at the rink.

Other Leafs’ Players Spotted at Local Rinks

Interestingly, Matthews isn’t the only Leafs’ player who has been spotted at a local rink. During the 2024 Christmas break, William Nylander’s sister posted photos of their family skating at a different unnamed rink in Toronto. With Maple Leafs’ players frequently enjoying the city’s outdoor rinks, fans can always hope for a surprise encounter.

Maple Leafs Back in Action

After the surprise skate, Matthews and the Leafs are gearing up for their next match at the Scotiabank Centre against the Vancouver Canucks. The Leafs’ captain, with six goals and eight points in his last five games, will undoubtedly be looking to continue his excellent form.
