Nearly 5km of TTC subway, a significant stretch of Toronto’s transportation network, will be shut down for this entire weekend of January 17-18. This marks the first major planned disruption of 2026 and follows a staggering 38 weekend closures last year.
Maintenance Work Leads to Subway Closure
The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has declared a halt on the service on a substantial section of Line 2 Bloor-Danforth for the entire weekend. The closure is due to planned signal work, essential for the safety and efficiency of the network. This work requires a temporary suspension of service on a 4.9-kilometre stretch of track, which spans Ossington, Dufferin, Lansdowne, Dundas West, Keele, High Park, Runnymede, and Jane stations. This interruption is a part of the TTC’s commitment to ensuring their service remains reliable and up-to-date.
Impact on Commuters
Passengers who rely on this section of Line 2 will unfortunately have to brace the harsh winter weather and rely on shuttle buses for their commute. Of the eight stations affected by the planned work, only High Park and Lansdowne stations will be fully closed. The Russett Avenue entrance at Dufferin Station will also be inaccessible. However, all other stations along the closed stretch, barring High Park and Lansdowne, will remain open for passengers to purchase or reload their fares and to connect to other TTC surface routes.
Resumption of Normal Service
Commuters can expect the regular subway service to resume in time for the start of the morning rush on Monday, January 19. The TTC anticipates recommencing regular operations at approximately 6 a.m., ensuring minimal disruption to the weekday commute.
Essential Maintenance Work
While the disruption may be a significant inconvenience for TTC riders, the transit agency emphasizes that such closures are necessary to complete state-of-good-repair work. The TTC typically conducts most subway maintenance work at the end of service each night. However, essential repair and upgrade work occasionally requires early nightly and weekend closures. These disruptions, though inconvenient, help ensure the long-term reliability and safety of the system.
