Ontario cafe lays off entire staff months after they unionized

Published on

Weeks before the holidays, an Ontario cafe, Democracy on Locke, abruptly shut its doors, leaving its employees jobless and the community puzzled. This sudden closure, which occurred within months of the staff unionizing, has raised concerns and questions among the former employees and the local community.

Venue Closure and Staff Layoffs

The Hamilton-based cafe, noted for its broad plant-based menu, has been a community mainstay for over a decade. However, the week commencing Dec. 15 marked its unexpected closure. Aside from the General and Assistant General Manager who were allegedly relocated to other establishments owned by the same proprietor, all other staff members were informed that they would be laid off without severance on Dec. 21. Yet, the cafe ceased operations and deactivated its website and social media even before the announced layoff date.

Community Response and Staff Appeal

In response to this abrupt closure, a GoFundMe fundraiser was launched by a friend and family member of the displaced staff to help mitigate the impact of the layoffs. The campaign includes a letter penned by the former Democracy on Locke personnel detailing their predicament.

The letter reveals that the staff was notified about the imminent closure less than two weeks before it happened. It also disputes the owner’s claim that the closure was due to the resignation of the General and Assistant General Manager, stating that these two had merely been relocated to other businesses run by the same owner.

Concerns over Timing of Closure

The timing of the closure has also raised eyebrows, as it occurred only two months after the staff had ratified their first union contract. The team had fought hard to secure a contract that guaranteed job security, safety, and basic fairness. Despite facing unfair targeting for their union work, which even led to a Labour Board complaint and subsequent compensation, the team continued their fight for fairness.

Outcome of Fundraiser

As of Dec. 19, the GoFundMe fundraiser has exceeded its initial goal of $6,000, raising over $16,000. This means each laid-off employee will receive approximately $1,300. Despite this financial support, the staff members express their anger and fear over losing their jobs so close to the holidays and the dismissal of their efforts to create a safer, better workplace.

Democracy on Locke has not yet responded to requests for comment on the closure and layoffs. The owners currently oversee five other businesses in the Hamilton area.
