Statistics Canada, also known as StatsCan, is in the process of a major recruitment drive. The agency is looking to fill thousands of high-paying jobs across the country in anticipation of the 2026 Census of Population that will kick off this spring. The national statistical agency aims to hire approximately 32,000 individuals for a variety of roles, including census enumerators and crew leaders.
StatsCan’s Important Role in Gathering Population Data
Every five years, StatsCan conducts a comprehensive Census of Population and a Census of Agriculture. The aim of these surveys is to gather detailed data about the country’s diverse population and agricultural operations. This data forms a statistical portrait of Canada and the places where Canadians live. André Loranger, the Chief Statistician of Canada, emphasized the importance of these data in a recent press release. He stated, “These are data that matter, and it all begins by asking the right questions.”
Beyond just gathering data, StatsCan also plays a crucial role in developing the census questionnaires. This process involves extensive work and consultation, with the aim to ensure the census delivers reliable data that Canadians have come to expect.
Impact of Census Data on Everyday Life
The data collected by StatsCan is used for multiple purposes. Governments, businesses, and organizations use this information to plan various services that directly impact Canadians’ everyday lives. These services include public transportation, health care, employment opportunities, and education. Therefore, the work StatsCan does has a direct influence on the quality of life and well-being of Canadian citizens.
Details about the Job Positions
The job positions offered by StatsCan are quite diverse. Enumerators, who form the majority of the workforce, work part-time with varied schedules, with most of the work being in the evening and on weekends. They are tasked with collecting questionnaires from households, following up with respondents, and shipping completed questionnaires. They are compensated with an hourly wage of $25.87, plus authorized expenses such as mileage and parking.
Crew leaders, on the other hand, are tasked with training, leading, and supervising a team. This is a full-time position and requires availability during daytimes, evenings, and weekends. Crew leaders receive an hourly wage of $31.23.
In select Northern and remote communities, the census pay rate is higher, with non-supervisors earning $35.79 per hour and supervisors earning $37.79 per hour, along with authorized expenses.
