In the whirlwind of the MLB offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays are still actively pursuing the return of Bo Bichette for the 2026 season. The 27-year-old shortstop is currently weighing his options as a free agent, with multiple teams including the LA Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox showing interest. However, the Blue Jays remain engaged in discussions with Bichette, hoping to secure his return.
Bo Bichette’s Free Agency Status
As reported by Shi Davidi on the FAN Morning Show, Bichette is still in the process of evaluating his options. “He’s running through his process,” said Davidi, adding that, “The Blue Jays are staying engaged there. Bo knows that there is a certain level of interest with the Blue Jays. Will that line up, or will that line up with Kyle Tucker instead?”
Bichette’s camp maintains that his decision is independent of other free agents, and he’s not waiting for any other players before making his own decision. “Those processes just have continued to play out,” explained Davidi.
Blue Jays’ Offseason Moves
The Blue Jays have been active this offseason, making significant acquisitions such as Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers. Consequently, it’s unlikely that the organization will have the budget to retain both Bichette and Tucker, another high-profile free agent.
While talks with Tucker have cooled off since his visit to the Blue Jays’ facilities, GM Ross Atkins and his staff remain interested. “The Blue Jays do have interest. There are a lot of teams monitoring this to see where the price lands, and if it lands into where their comfort zone is,” Davidi said of the situation.
Contract Expectations
While the free-agent market has seen players land deals higher than initially projected, Tucker is believed to be seeking a deal worth around $400 million. Bichette, on the other hand, is expected to settle for a deal closer to $200 million. The Blue Jays, like many other teams, are closely monitoring the situation to see where the price lands and whether it aligns with their budget.
The ultimate decision lies in the hands of Bichette and his camp. Regardless of the outcome, the Toronto Blue Jays are demonstrating their commitment to building a competitive team for the 2026 season and beyond.
