Toronto Maple Leafs now have worst playoff odds of all Canadian NHL teams

Published on

The Toronto Maple Leafs are now facing a bleak winter, with the worst playoff odds of all Canadian NHL teams. The team’s current state seems precarious as they navigate through a season that appears to be more of a nightmare rather than an exciting journey towards the playoffs.

Trouble Brewing for the Toronto Maple Leafs

As the holiday season approaches, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a dire predicament. With a lackluster performance throughout the year, they are currently languishing at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. As of now, they sit second-last in the Eastern Conference, and six points away from a playoff spot. A recent 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators has further deepened their woes, which some fans and critics deem as the nadir of Toronto’s season.

Diminishing Playoff Hopes

The clock is ticking for the Maple Leafs and their playoff aspirations seem to be fading with each defeat. The team’s mediocre record of 15-14-5 places them at an uncomfortable 25th position in the league. According to MoneyPuck, an analytics website, Toronto’s odds of making it to the playoffs stand at a dismal 11.1 per cent, making them one of the most desperate teams in the league.

Comparative Playoff Odds

This 11.1 per cent is the fourth-lowest odds in the NHL and the worst among Canadian teams. Astonishingly, despite having a better position in the standings, the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames, both of whom are in the rebuilding phase, have better playoff odds. The Flames stand at 25.4 per cent and the Canucks slightly lower at 18.1 per cent. Even the struggling Winnipeg Jets are faring better with a 28 per cent chance.

Among the Canadian clubs, the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, and Edmonton Oilers are leading the way with playoff chances of 49.6 per cent, 52.2 per cent, and 75.7 per cent respectively. The teams with worse odds than the Leafs are the San Jose Sharks (10.4 per cent), Nashville Predators (10.3 per cent), and Columbus Blue Jackets (6.2 per cent).

A Chance for Redemption?

Despite the grim prognosis, the Toronto Maple Leafs still have an opportunity to turn their season around. However, they need to seize this chance quickly and start delivering on the ice to improve their playoff odds. As we move deeper into the season, every game will prove crucial in determining whether they can rekindle their playoff hopes or whether their season continues its downward trajectory.
