Toronto Raptors could be looking to trade for controversy-plagued player

Published on

Toronto Raptors could be looking to trade for controversy-plagued player, Ja Morant, as per recent reports. The Raptors are no strangers to making big moves and their latest potential acquisition could be one of the NBA’s most contentious figures.

Rumours Connect Raptors to Ja Morant

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the Toronto Raptors are reportedly showing keen interest in Memphis Grizzlies’ superstar guard, Ja Morant. The Raptors, currently focused on solidifying their playoff position, have been linked to several big names in the NBA, including Trae Young and Anthony Davis. However, it seems their pursuit for Morant remains unabated.

Raptors’ Interest in NBA Bigwigs

NBA insider, Jake Fischer, reported that the Raptors had expressed meaningful interest in Trae Young before he was eventually traded to the Washington Wizards. The Raptors have also pursued Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks and Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings. But Fischer suggests that the Raptors’ interest in Morant is particularly noteworthy.

Morant’s Potential Fit with Raptors

Ja Morant, 26, is a leading figure in the NBA and aligns with the Raptors’ young core of Scottie Barnes, Gradey Dick, and Brandon Ingram. If a deal is struck, Morant’s addition would significantly elevate the Raptors’ performance and make them formidable contenders in the postseason. Morant is currently in the third year of his five-year, $197 million contract, averaging 19 points, 7.6 assists, and 6.6 field goals in 18 games this season.

Controversial History of Morant

However, trading for Morant would not be without its complications. The player has been a subject of controversy in recent years. The South Carolina native has faced multiple suspensions due to inappropriate gun-related behaviour both on and off the court. He was fined last season for making gun hand gestures during a game and was suspended for flashing a gun on social media.

Competition for Morant’s Trade

The Raptors are not the only team reportedly interested in Morant. The Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Sacramento Kings have also shown interest in acquiring the former Rookie of the Year. Securing Morant would undeniably bolster the Raptors’ on-court performance, but it could also introduce several potential issues in the locker room, given Morant’s controversial past.

Despite the potential challenges, it’s clear that the Toronto Raptors are willing to consider all options in their pursuit of NBA glory.
