Two Toronto Raptors players appeared in The Nutcracker

Published on

In a delightful display of holiday spirit, two Toronto Raptors players, Scottie Barnes and Jamal Shead, took on an unexpected role off the basketball court. The pair made a special appearance in The Nutcracker, performed by The National Ballet of Canada, continuing a tradition for local celebrities in Toronto.

Barnes and Shead Joined the National Ballet of Canada

On Friday, Barnes and Shead had the honor of playing the Cannon Dolls in The Nutcracker. The roles are a fun addition to the classic ballet, and are usually filled by local celebrities. Their participation was shared by the National Ballet of Canada on Instagram, causing quite a stir among Raptors fans and ballet enthusiasts alike.

Continuing a Raptors Tradition

The Raptors duo were not the first from their team to participate in the ballet. Former Raptors Kyle Lowry and Matt Thomas have also taken on the role of the Cannon Dolls, making it somewhat of a tradition for the basketball team. This year, other notable personalities such as Arkells frontman Max Kerman, David Sanchez and Kate Beirness from TSN also stepped into the ballet shoes for the same roles.

Embracing the Role

For Barnes and Shead, the experience was a new and exciting venture. The Cannon Dolls, despite being dressed identically, portray contrasting characters; one is exuberant and prideful, while the other is shy and timid. Barnes, known for his charisma on the court, naturally took on the role of the exuberant Cannon Doll. He expressed his excitement for the opportunity to reporters, stating, “I wanna explore, do different things in life. It’s gonna be a great experience for me. My family is gonna be there, and they’re pretty excited.”

Raptors’ Holiday Gift to Fans

The Raptors players’ participation in The Nutcracker isn’t the only thing that has fans in high spirits this holiday season. The team has been a pleasant surprise in the NBA, rocketing up the standings despite missing out on the playoffs for the past three seasons. Currently, they hold the third spot in the Eastern Conference with a 17-11 record, offering plenty of cheer to Raptors supporters.
