The G7 group of nations has escalated its demand for the immediate release of Hong Kong publisher, Jimmy Lai. This call comes in the wake of Lai’s conviction for sedition and collusion with foreign forces, a verdict that could result in a life sentence. The G7’s collective pressure on China to free the media mogul on humanitarian grounds is a significant development in this international incident.
Global Outcry Over Jimmy Lai’s Conviction
Jimmy Lai, a media magnate with substantial family and commercial ties to Canada, was found guilty in a Hong Kong court on Monday. His conviction has sparked global outrage, with voices from Canada, where MPs and his Canadian relatives have joined human rights and press freedom advocates in calling for his release.
At 78 years old, Lai has spent the last five years in solitary confinement since being charged under Hong Kong’s national security law. This law, implemented by Beijing in 2020 following months of pro-democracy protests, has led to the imprisonment of numerous individuals, including activists.
G7 Nations Unite In Condemnation
On Wednesday, a joint statement was issued by the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the United States, as well as the High Representative of the European Union. They denounced the prosecution and conviction of Lai, reaffirming their concerns about the degradation of rights, freedoms, and autonomy in Hong Kong.
The statement emphasized that “Freedom of expression and opinion, and media freedom, are enshrined in Hong Kong’s Basic Law.” It concluded with a direct call to the Hong Kong authorities to halt such prosecutions and to “release Jimmy Lai immediately”.
Health Concerns for Lai
Lai, a millionaire businessman, suffers from diabetes. His family and legal team have voiced deep concerns for his health. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, along with MPs from various political parties, called for Lai’s release earlier this week.
In the United Kingdom, Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, discussed Lai’s case in the House of Commons. Lai, a British citizen, is now awaiting sentencing.
International Diplomatic Efforts
Former U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed to reporters that he had requested Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider freeing Lai. He cited Lai’s age and health as substantial concerns. Canadian MPs have also urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss Lai’s case during his upcoming visit to China.
Lai, who founded the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper in Hong Kong, was an outspoken critic of the Chinese Communist Party prior to his arrest in 2020. His arrest formed part of a broader clampdown on dissent in Hong Kong, a former British colony renowned for press freedom.
