QuickList on the 23 of Alberta’s politicians facing citizen recalls petitions

Published on

QuickList on the 23 of Alberta’s politicians facing citizen recalls petitions: In a move that reflects growing unrest among constituents, 23 elected representatives in the Alberta legislature are now facing recall petitions. This includes 22 from Premier Danielle Smith’s 47-member United Conservative Party caucus and one from the Opposition NDP. This marks the first time Alberta’s Recall Act, designed to empower citizens and hold politicians accountable between general elections, has been used on provincial politicians.

Alberta’s Recall Act

The Recall Act was established under former UCP premier Jason Kenney. It allows constituents to submit a petition for the recall of their MLA, provided they submit a statement, in 100 words or fewer, outlining their reasons and pay a $500 processing fee. Once approved by Elections Alberta, the petitioner has 90 days to gather signatures from 60% of the constituents who voted in the last election. If successful, a constituency-wide vote determines whether the MLA should be recalled. If the majority vote in favour, the MLA is removed and a byelection is held.

United Conservative Party (UCP) Members Facing Recalls

Out of the 23 politicians facing recall, 22 are members of the United Conservative Party. The reasons cited by petitioners range from perceived lack of responsiveness to constituents, prioritizing party loyalty over constituent needs, supporting government decisions that are seen as harmful to the public, to advocating for policies that allegedly undermine democratic control and reduce access to services.

Notable UCP Recall Petitions

Among the UCP members facing recalls are Demetrios Nicolaides, Angela Pitt, Nolan Dyck, Myles McDougall, Ric McIver, Muhammad Yaseen, Rajan Sawhney, R.J. Sigurdson, Dale Nally, Glenn van Dijken, Jackie Lovely, Nathan Neudorf, Jason Stephan, Searle Turton, Peter Singh, Tanya Fir, Adriana LaGrange, Rebecca Schulz, Danielle Smith, Nate Glubish, Mickey Amery, and Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk. Each of these politicians is facing accusations from citizens who feel their needs and concerns are not being adequately addressed.

Opposition NDP Member Facing Recall

From the Opposition NDP, Amanda Chapman is the only member facing a recall. The petitioner accuses her of prioritizing divisive partisan attacks over the representation of the constituency and supporting public-sector unions at the expense of residents.

Political Impact

The wave of recall petitions speaks to a significant level of dissatisfaction among Albertans with their elected representatives. While the recall process is intended for cases of serious misconduct, some politicians argue that it is being weaponized by partisan activists. The outcome of these recall petitions could potentially reshape Alberta’s political landscape, affecting the balance of power in the legislature and possibly triggering a general election.
