Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard sidelined with upper-body injury

Published on

Blackhawks’ star player, Connor Bedard, finds himself sidelined due to an upper-body injury. The unfortunate incident has raised questions about his participation in the upcoming Olympics, revealing a potential setback for his career and the team’s performance in the upcoming games.

Bedard’s Injury and Its Impact

Connor Bedard’s Olympic hopes came under the cloud of uncertainty on Monday when the Chicago Blackhawks announced his placement on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury. The move is retroactive to December 12, following an injury he sustained in the last seconds of the Blackhawks’ 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

Jeff Blashill, the Blackhawks’ coach, shared on Monday that the 20-year-old centre will undergo a re-evaluation in the new year. Thankfully, no surgery is required for Bedard, offering a silver lining to his predicament. The Blackhawks still have seven games left in 2025, and Bedard’s absence could significantly impact their performance.

The Incident Leading to Bedard’s Injury

Bedard was injured while attempting to secure a win for his team. He was knocked down by Blues’ centre Brayden Schenn in a move that resulted in him clutching his right shoulder and leaving the game, accompanied by a trainer. Post-game, Blashill reflected on the incident, stating he didn’t perceive any foul play. “Honestly, I think it’s a freak accident,” Blashill said.

Bedard’s Contribution to the Blackhawks

Bedard leads the Blackhawks with an impressive score of 44 points in 31 games, placing him fourth in the NHL. His performance has made him a key player for the team, and his absence could be sorely felt in the remaining games of 2025. The former No. 1 draft pick has also been considered a potential candidate for Team Canada at the Milan Cortina Games.

Chicago Blackhawks’ Future Games

Despite the setback, the Blackhawks are set to embark on a three-game road trip, starting Tuesday at Toronto. In light of Bedard’s injury, the team has recalled defenceman Ethan Del Mastro and goaltender Laurent Brossoit from Rockford of the American Hockey League. Brossoit was previously in the minors on a conditioning assignment.

Del Mastro, at 22, already has two goals and four assists in his 27 career games with Chicago. His addition to the team could prove beneficial in the upcoming games.
