Canadian defender Nikola Markovic chosen first overall by D.C. United in MLS SuperDraft

Published on

In a historic move that underscores his talent and promise, Canadian defender Nikola Markovic was chosen first overall by D.C. United in the MLS SuperDraft. The 21-year-old soccer player from Gatineau, Quebec, has been making waves on the field, most recently aiding North Carolina State in reaching the NCAA tournament championship game.

Nikola Markovic’s Rise to Prominence

Markovic, the esteemed Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Year, signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer (MLS). These contracts are particularly coveted as they don’t count against a team’s salary cap. This allows teams to invest in promising, young talent like Markovic without the financial constraints of their budget.

The six-foot-four centre back not only has an impressive physical presence but also has a golden track record. He was part of the Quebec team that clinched gold at the 2022 Canada Games. Moreover, he honed his skills at the CF Montreal academy before making his way to North Carolina State.

A Season of Success at North Carolina State

Markovic’s sophomore year saw him starting all 22 games for North Carolina State. Under his defensive leadership, the Wolfpack outscored its opposition 50-12, achieving an NCAA-best 15 shutouts. His exceptional performance earned him first-team all-American honours and placed him as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. This made him the first-ever No. 1 overall selection in North Carolina State program history.

Markovic’s Offensive Contributions

While his defensive skills are undeniable, Markovic has also proven his worth on the offensive end. Last November, he scored the winning goal for the Wolfpack in the first round of the NCAA tournament against Charlotte. Over the season, he scored two goals and assisted two, demonstrating his versatility on the field.

Accolades and Recognition

Markovic’s stellar performance on the field has not gone unnoticed. After making the All-ACC Freshman Team last season, he was named to the 2025 All-ACC Team. His contributions to defense also earned him the conference defensive player honours.

Markovic’s selection as the first overall in the MLS SuperDraft marks a significant milestone in his career, following in the footsteps of Cyle Larin, the only other Canadian to have achieved this honour in 2015. With his impressive track record and the promise of a bright future, Markovic is poised to make significant contributions to D.C. United and the MLS.
