The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Wild, marking the end of an era. This significant roster shakeup comes amidst an ongoing challenging season and signals a strategic move by the Canucks to reshape their team.
Hughes Traded to the Minnesota Wild
As reported by Sportsnet’s Elliot Friedman, the Canucks have traded their star defenceman and team captain, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild. In return, the Canucks will receive Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium, and the Wild’s first-round draft pick in 2026. The Canucks had not officially confirmed the deal by 8 p.m. ET.
Challenging Season for the Canucks
The Canucks are navigating a difficult season, with the team currently sitting last in the Pacific Division and last in the Western Conference, with a record of 11-17-3. Despite this, Hughes has remained a beacon of hope, contributing 23 points this season, including two goals.
Hughes: A Valuable Asset
Originally picked seventh overall by the Canucks in the 2018 draft, 26-year-old Hughes has consistently been a strong asset for the team. Over 459 regular-season games, he has accumulated 432 points. In October, he established a new record for points by a Canucks defenceman, surpassing Alex Edler’s 409 points.
Hughes’ Career Highlights
When Hughes was made captain ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, he responded by posting a career-high 92 points and leading the Canucks to the top of the Pacific Division. His performance won him the 2024 Norris Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league’s top defenceman. Hughes was nominated for the honour again in 2025, despite a season hampered by injuries.
Speculations About Hughes’ Future
Speculations about Hughes’ future with the Canucks began to circulate in September after his younger brother, New Jersey Devils centre Jack Hughes, expressed his desire to play alongside Quinn. Quinn, who isn’t a free agent until July 2027, responded to his brother’s comments stating that while it would be enjoyable to play with his siblings, he remained committed to the Canucks.
Hughes’ Financial Agreement with the Canucks
Hughes has one year left on a six-year, US$47.1-million deal that he signed with the Canucks in October 2021, which equates to a cap hit of US$7.85-million. As the Canucks embark on a new chapter, it will be interesting to see how these changes affect the team’s performance going forward.
