Indian fans throw bottles, storm field as Lionel Messi kicks off tour of India

Published on

Lionel Messi, one of the most celebrated footballers in the world, recently embarked on a tour of India. However, the much-anticipated event took a chaotic turn when Indian fans, who were eager to catch a glimpse of their idol, resorted to throwing bottles and even storming the field. The incident occurred at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, marking a rocky start to Messi’s tour of the subcontinent.

Angry Fans Disrupt Messi’s Tour

According to The Times of India, several ticket-holders were left disappointed and angry as they failed to see Messi, either in person or on the stadium’s big screens, despite waiting for hours. This led to an outbreak of chaos as fans began to throw bottles and attempted to vandalize the stadium.

Government Apologizes for Mismanagement

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee apologized to Messi and the fans for the mismanagement of the event. Taking to social media, she expressed her shock and disturbance over the incident, and apologized to fans who had expected more after paying for tickets. Banerjee also announced that a committee would be constituted to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Fans Cause Damage at Salt Lake Stadium

The irate fans, many of whom sported Messi Argentina shirts, threw seats from the stands, breached security fences, and tried to cause further damage on the field. Security personnel eventually managed to chase them away. By that time, Messi had already left the venue.

Messi’s India Tour Continues

Despite the unfortunate incident, Messi’s three-day “GOAT India Tour” continues. The tour is scheduled to take the World Cup winner from Kolkata to Hyderabad, then Mumbai, and finally to New Delhi on Monday. Messi is joined by his longtime teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul.

Earlier on Saturday, Messi remotely unveiled a 21-meter statue of himself in Kolkata, marking his significant influence and popularity in the country, even amidst the controversy.
