Liverpool, without Salah, tops Inter; Davies returns for Bayern Munich

Published on

In a remarkable display of resilience, Liverpool F.C., even without their star player Mohamed Salah, managed to secure a 1-0 victory against Inter Milan in the Champions League league phase match on Tuesday. Also noteworthy was the return of Alphonso Davies for Bayern Munich following a serious knee injury in March.

Liverpool’s Triumph Without Salah

Despite Mohamed Salah’s absence, who was left in England following his public criticism of the club last week, Liverpool F.C. managed to pull off a vital win over Inter Milan. Dominik Szoboszlai, filling in for Salah as the regular penalty taker, scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, leading to a crucial victory over one of the competition’s best-performing teams.

This win came as a much-needed respite for Arne Slot’s under-pressure team, which had previously managed only one win in their previous six games across all competitions. The victory saw Liverpool move up to eighth place, reigniting their hopes for a direct spot in the round of 16. While Liverpool celebrated their victory, Inter Milan found themselves dropping to fifth place.

Controversial Moments and Var’s Role

In the 31st minute, Liverpool’s players believed they had taken the lead with Ibrahima Konate’s header. However, after a long video review, the goal was disallowed due to handball, as Virgil van Dijk had earlier inadvertently directed the ball onto the arm of Hugo Ekitike.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) came to Liverpool’s aid later when it spotted Alessandro Bastoni tugging Florian Wirtz’s shirt in the penalty area, leading to Szoboszlai’s decisive penalty conversion.

Bayern Munich’s Rising Star

Bayern Munich’s 17-year-old midfielder, Lennart Karl, showcased his talent with an audacious display in the Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon. Scoring his third goal in four Champions League appearances, Karl controlled a mid-air pass from Konrad Laimer, volleyed a shot from a tight angle over two onrushing defenders, and past the goalkeeper, continuing his high-scoring start in the competition.

After Sporting took the lead with Joshua Kimmich’s own-goal, Bayern staged a 12-minute, three-goal turnaround, with Serge Gnabry equalizing the score, followed by Karl’s stunning goal, and finally Jonathan Tah making it 3-1.

Interestingly, Karl became Bayern’s youngest-ever Champions League scorer in October on his first start in the competition. Moreover, Canadian left back Alphonso Davies made a comeback after a serious knee injury, entering the game from the bench.

Chelsea’s Loss and Other Highlights

In other matches, Chelsea F.C. suffered their first Champions League loss in nearly three months to Atalanta, with Belgian forward Charles De Ketelaere scoring the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Elsewhere, with a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, Barcelona celebrated a comeback thanks to two headers by Jules Koundé. Tottenham also claimed a victory over Slavia Prague with a 3-0 scoreline in a match overshadowed by a dispute over a rainbow flag representing LGBTQ+ support.
