Olympic roster decisions will be ‘excruciatingly tough,’ Canada coach Jon Cooper says

Published on

As the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games approach, Canada’s head coach Jon Cooper has admitted that the decisions regarding the Olympic roster will be ‘excruciatingly tough’. This will mark the much-anticipated return of the league and its players to the Olympics after a 12-year absence. Cooper, who is also the head coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning, has the challenging task of selecting the best Canadian players for the upcoming games, even as he deals with a challenging NHL season riddled with key player injuries.

Jon Cooper’s Dual Role

While handling his day job as the coach for Tampa Bay Lightning, Jon Cooper has had to navigate a season peppered with injuries to key players. Normally, this would occupy all of the professional bandwidth of the two-time Stanley Cup winner. However, this season is different. The league and its players are set to make a much-awaited return to the Olympics at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games after a 12-year hiatus.

Canada’s Return to the Olympics

Cooper, who led Canada to victory in the 4 Nations Face-Off and will assume the same role in Italy, anticipates tough decisions when it comes to formalizing the country’s roster. As the much-anticipated Olympic return draws closer, the selection process is intensifying, especially with the stellar performances of Canadian players in recent games. The selection process for the Canadian team has been a meticulous one, with the coach and the selection committee keenly watching and evaluating the players.

Young Talents in the Spotlight

Notably, two young Canadian players, Macklin Celebrini from San Jose Sharks and Connor Bedard from Chicago Blackhawks, have forced their way into the selection conversation. Expected to be on the outside looking in back in October due to a logjam of forward talent, these young stars have shown remarkable performances. Celebrini, 19, sat second in NHL scoring with 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists), only behind Nathan MacKinnon. Bedard, 20, held the No. 4 spot with 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists), just two points behind Connor McDavid.

Canada’s Roster Selection

Canada’s roster for the Olympics already boasts a wealth of talent with players like Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Cale Makar, Sam Reinhart, and Brayden Point already named. These players were instrumental in helping Canada win the 4 Nations tournament, setting a positive tone ahead of the Olympic games. The deadline for finalizing the roster for the 2026 Winter Games in Italy is Dec. 31.

Cooper’s Approach to Roster Selection

Cooper acknowledged the difficulty of the selection process, emphasizing that it is a testament to the high level of skill and talent among the players. He also noted that the past year has helped build relationships with the players and gain a good understanding of the team dynamics. This experience is expected to be instrumental in shaping a strong roster for the upcoming Olympic games.
