Raptors struggling without Barrett as NBA Cup quarter-final against Knicks looms

Published on

The recent struggles of the Toronto Raptors have been notably intensified by the absence of their star player, RJ Barrett. The Canadian team has been grappling with a series of losses, with their latest defeat at the hands of the Boston Celtics. The upcoming NBA Cup quarter-final against the New York Knicks adds another layer of pressure to the team as they navigate this challenging phase.

Raptors’ Performance without Barrett

As the Raptors face their third consecutive loss, the absence of offensive dynamo RJ Barrett becomes more evident. The Canadian star player, suffering from a sprained right knee, was seen hobbling outside the Raptors locker room following the team’s 121-113 defeat to the Celtics. The team announced on Monday that Barrett would be sidelined for at least another week following a platelet-rich plasma injection in his sprained right knee.

Without Barrett, the Raptors have dropped five of their last eight games and five of their last six overall. “Getting used to playing without somebody who averages 20 and is a real focal point in our offence [isn’t easy],” said Toronto guard Jamal Shead. “Getting used to trying to have other people step up, I think we can do it. We just haven’t figured it out yet.”

Struggling First Half Against Celtics

The Raptors’ match against the Celtics revealed a concerning performance. With a massive 77-59 advantage, the Celtics dominated the first half of the game. Yet, the second half saw a shift as Raptors players like Shead, Ochai Agbaji and A.J. Lawson started contributing off the bench. Agbaji finished with a season-high 11 points, his first double-digit scoring performance of the campaign.

Despite this improvement in the second half, the Raptors’ poor first-half performance left head coach Darko Rajakovic perplexed. The 77 first-half points were the most Toronto has surrendered in a half this season. “We all know who RJ is and what he brings to the table for us,” said Rajakovic. “He’s a very important player for us offensively, but I don’t want to look at it in those terms. He’s not here. We gotta figure it out. We have a more than capable team. We have a lot of talent.”

Upcoming Quarter-final Against Knicks

As the Raptors prepare for the fifth and final game of their homestand against the New York Knicks, the team is also seeking to avenge their previous 116-94 loss at Madison Square Garden without Barrett. Toronto’s Brandon Ingram, who led Toronto with 30 points on the one-year anniversary of suffering a season-ending left ankle injury, stressed the importance of maintaining a clear mindset. “What I’d personally say is throw everything else out the window,” Ingram said. “The biggest thing is just to clear our minds. None of us like losing, none of us like being in this situation, so we just gotta come in with a clear mind.”

The Raptors are at a crucial juncture of their season and the upcoming NBA Cup quarter-final against the Knicks is a significant challenge. The team’s resilience and ability to adapt without Barrett will indeed be tested in the coming days.
