Which cash-back credit card is right for you? We ranked Canada’s top choices in 2025 to help you navigate through the plethora of options available. The competition among credit card companies is intense, with each trying to lure Canadian consumers with attractive offers. These offers are broadcasted everywhere, from social media feeds to subway billboards and airport lounges. However, it can be challenging to decide which one offers the best value. This is where our independent guide comes in, providing insights into the performance of different cards, thereby empowering you to choose the one that aligns with your financial goals.
An Emphasis on Real-World Value
In 2025, our guide places even more emphasis on real-world value. We rank cash-back cards based on how much money they return to cardholders after fees. This includes using three-year and five-year calculations that consider base rates, bonus rewards, and sign-up offers. We also account for spending caps – limits on how much of your spending is eligible for accelerated cash-back rates. These can significantly affect the value of a card for higher-spending households and are often overlooked in bank calculators. While perks and insurance are displayed on our page, they are not factored into the ranking.
Our Independent Methodology
All card and promotion information was collected as of Nov. 25, 2025. The landscape of sign-up offers and terms is constantly changing, and our calculations reflect the cards’ benefits at that time. Importantly, our guide is completely independent. It wasn’t sponsored by a credit card company or bank, and we don’t receive any financial compensation if you decide to apply for one of the cards on our list.

Three Cards to Consider
Here’s a look at three cards that are worth considering, based on their cash-back benefits and user-friendliness.
Top Cash Generator
The SimplyCash Preferred Card from American Express lives up to its name by offering impressive cash-back earning rates. It offers 4 per cent on gas and groceries, plus a rare 2-per-cent rate on all other purchases. With a monthly fee of $9.99 ($119.88 annually), it is a good choice for savvy spenders. Although American Express has a more limited network of merchants who accept it in Canada compared with Visa and Mastercard, it has no income requirements, making it accessible to a wide range of consumers.
Best Option for Busy Families
The BMO CashBack World Elite Mastercard is a standout card with strong earn rates on everyday spending. It offers 5 per cent on groceries, 4 per cent on public transit and taxis, 3 per cent on gas and EV charging, 2 per cent on recurring bills and 1 per cent on everything else. Its broad category coverage makes it especially appealing for households with varied spending patterns. Although the card has higher income requirements typical of premium products, it offers substantial value for users who aim to maximize returns on routine expenses.
Fintech Favourite with a Long Wait-List
Wealthsimple’s new Visa Infinite card quickly became a hot topic this year, offering unlimited 2-per-cent cash back and zero foreign-exchange fees. However, the launch has been a slow process and has led to frustration among the more than 200,000 Canadians who joined the waitlist. The card’s monthly fee doubled to $20 shortly after the launch, but it’s waived for clients with at least $100,000 in assets or $4,000 in monthly direct deposits. The high flat-rate rewards are appealing, but without the fee waiver, cardholders would need to spend about $12,000 a year to break even. This card is best suited for existing Wealthsimple users rather than those looking for a low-cost, high-reward stand-alone option.
Which cash-back credit card is best for you? Remember, it’s essential to personalize the ranking to fit your criteria and spending habits. Happy hunting!
