This former shop teacher moved to a hobby farm in retirement to keep active. After a fulfilling career as an industrial arts teacher, Jim Letts, at the age of 57, decided to shift gears and retired in 2020. He now spends his time working on a hobby farm, highlighting how retirement can be a new chapter for engaging in activities that keep both the body and mind occupied.

Letts, originally an industrial arts teacher or what many refer to as a shop teacher, chose to retire early at the age of 57. His decision was influenced by the changing dynamics at work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The enjoyment he once found in his work was replaced by a longing for something different.

Embracing the Farm Life

In his retirement, Letts remains active – embracing the farm life near his childhood home. He has a shop on his farm where he invests time in building and repairing items. The former teacher also uses his expertise in landscaping and snow removal. As someone who enjoys working with his hands and being outdoors, retirement has provided him an opportunity to invest more time in these pursuits.

The Wait for His Wife’s Retirement

Letts’ wife is still working as an administrative assistant at their church. The couple is looking forward to traveling more once she retires. While it has been a bit challenging for them due to differing schedules, she plans to retire or at least transit to part-time work soon.

Financial Security and Practical Spending

The couple has maintained financial security through prudent planning. Letts’ wife, a meticulous financial partner, has kept their finances in excellent condition. They have been saving for retirement since Letts started teaching in 1987. The couple also ensured they were debt-free when they got married, a status they have maintained into their retirement, giving them greater financial freedom.

Charitable Donations and Retirement

The Letts have not reduced their charitable donations in retirement, reflecting their belief in giving back as an essential part of life. Their financial security has allowed them to continue contributing to their community and supporting causes they care about.

Advice for Future Retirees

Letts advises those approaching retirement to diversify their activities and contacts. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining social connections and finding new friendships through volunteering or community activities. He also stresses the need to plan day-to-day activities in retirement, as you can only travel so much.
