Woman seriously hurt after being struck by TTC bus in Etobicoke on Friday morning

Published on

A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning when a woman was seriously injured after being hit by a Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) bus in Etobicoke. The accident occurred in the area of Evans Avenue and The West Mall, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.

Incident Details

According to Toronto Police, they received reports of a pedestrian being hit just before 6 a.m. The graphic below shows the scene of the accident. The woman, whose identity has not been released, was immediately rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Response from Authorities

The Toronto Police, along with other emergency services, responded promptly to the incident. The area was cordoned off for several hours to allow for a thorough investigation. The TTC also cooperated fully, expressing their deep concern and commitment to safety. TTC spokesperson Stuart Green expressed his sympathies for the victim, saying “our thoughts are with the person struck and their family at this difficult time.” The TTC also stated that they are providing all necessary information to the police to aid in their investigation.

Implications for Pedestrian Safety

The incident has again raised concerns about pedestrian safety in Toronto, particularly with regards to public buses. The City of Toronto has been working diligently to improve pedestrian safety through its Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. Despite this, Friday’s incident is a stark reminder of the continuous work that needs to be done.

What Can Be Done?

Experts suggest that designing streets for lower speeds, improving visibility at intersections, and enhancing public education about road safety can drastically reduce such incidents. The City, in collaboration with the TTC, is expected to continue its efforts in these areas.

In conclusion, Friday’s unfortunate incident is a grim reminder of the need for constant vigilance and continuous improvement in road safety measures. Our thoughts are with the victim and her family during this challenging time.
