CGI to build secure mobile communications network for NATO

Published on

In a significant development, CGI Inc., a leading information technology company, has inked a contract with NATO to build a secure mobile telecommunications network. This project, named Hermes, marks a strategic shift from wired connections to a secure mobile network, enabling “NATO executives and selected target groups” to communicate classified information securely, irrespective of their location.

CGI’s Groundbreaking Project for NATO

CGI Inc., with its headquarters in Montreal, has announced that it has signed a contract with NATO’s Communications and Information Agency. The details of the terms of the contract, however, have not been disclosed. This significant project aims to establish a highly secure mobile telecommunications system to facilitate safe and secure communication between top military alliance officials.CGI Headquarters in Montreal

Hermes: The Secure Mobile Network

The project, aptly named Hermes after the messenger of the Greek gods, is a pioneering effort by CGI and NATO’s Communications and Information Agency. The primary objective of this project is to enable “NATO executives and selected target groups” to send classified information over a secure network, regardless of their geographical location. This marks a significant shift away from traditional wired connections, thereby providing greater mobility and flexibility.

Additional Services and Future Prospects

In addition to the secure mobile network, CGI will also establish a new service operation centre. This centre will house a comprehensive monitoring system, a support line and an extensive training program for the users. This contract comes in the wake of CGI’s CEO, François Boulanger, expressing potential growth in the military sector, given the recent surge in defence spending in Canada and Europe.

Canada has been making efforts to boost its economy while enhancing its defences, and this contract is a testament to the potential that the military sector holds in contributing to the national economy. This partnership between CGI and NATO not only represents a significant technological advancement but also underscores the strategic importance of secure communication in today’s digital age.
